Built by Michael Dervan back in 1857, “Freeman’s Bay Hotel” one of Auckland’s first corner bars is a showpiece.
The third establishment in Auckland to obtain a liquor license, this was held by James McLeod in 1860. Prior to reclamation, this hotel was situated on the Freeman’s Bay foreshore.
The wooden Freeman’s Bay hotel was destroyed by fire in the mid 1880’s and replaced by the present brick building, which was reopened July 15th 1886 the structure costing £3000.
Leased to a brewery company in the early 1900s it then was taken over by Dervan’s sons William and Eugene during World War I. Two grandsons Phillip and Dervan Goldwater were later licensees for 14 years.
In 1972, eighty-six years later, now belonging to Leopard Breweries completely changed the ageing building within its sturdy kauri and multiple brick exterior. Thus becoming the Leopard Tavern.
The unforgettable Kitty O’Brien’s, started an era of Irish Bars in Auckland around ten years ago now, and finally changing to Freeman’s the doors closed year ending 2002.
Partners, Warren Stewart and David Bagley went on their venture to once again refurbish this grand establishment creating a new Monteiths Craft Bar consisting of comfortable booth seats surrounding the walls & boasting stylish wooden décor.
The Drake offers an extensive scrumptious menu offered all hours of the day, delectable wine suitable for each palate and of course a diverse range of top shelf spirits and liqueurs and proudly serves the Monteith’s Craft Beer range. A lavish Function room and boardroom both are available for hosting private functions.
